Monthly Meeting 19 May 2021
Rob McGowan, Pa Ropata, Tiwaiwaka – Looking at the environment through Māori eyes.
Rob spoke on the work he is concerned and passionate about. Here are some notes off his webpage. Tiwaiwaka is one of the Māori names for the fantail, a bird very important in the traditional world of the Māori. The Tiwaiwaka movement is something that has arisen out of concern for the growing ecological crisis that looks set to affect us all. It originated from people who are involved with rongoa Māori, traditional Māori medicine and is a way of reaching out to the future in a way that reflects traditional Māori understandings of their connection to Papatūānuku. More than anything Tiwaiwaka is a message of hope. The answers to the present crisis can be found in the priorities that are found in most traditional cultures. This talk will outline the Tiwaiwaka principles and show how they relate to our present day realities.
